Adding Content From Revit & The Website

Modified on Thu, 19 Oct, 2023 at 4:35 PM

Add content to the library from other locations on the Kinship website or from Revit using the Kinship add-in

Families added by an administrator will be automatically approved, while families added by regular members will be unapproved. For details, see Approving Content.

Adding Content from the Website

Use the website to add content from an existing source in your Kinship team, such as a collection or a tracked model. When you add content from an existing source, you create a new copy of that content within the library.

If you later modify the original source content, this will NOT modify the content in the library, and visa versa – modifying the library content will not affect the original source content.

Adding Content from a Collection

  1. Navigate to the Collections tab and click on the relevant collection to view the Contents page.
  2. You can individually add families by clicking on the three-dots menu and selecting Add to Library. There will be a confirmation dialog and the family will then be added to the library.Add to Library collections
  3. Alternatively you can click on the Edit button to enable multiple selection. Clicking on a row will toggle the selection status or all the rows can be selected with the Select All button. The selected rows can be added to the library by clicking Add to Library above the list.Add to Library collections edit
  4. Click Done when finished to return to the collection’s Contents page.

Adding Content from a Model or Project

  1. Navigate to the page for the model or project and select the Families tab.

  2. Select individual families by clicking the checkbox on the left of each row, or select all families by clicking the “select all” checkbox at the top of the list.
  3. You can use the filters above the list to reduce the number of families displayed. If a filter is applied, clicking the “select all” checkbox will only select those families that are visible.
  4. Add the selected families to the library by using the share button in the top menu bar.

    • Current Model’s Families - All families in the model that is open in your active window. If no model is open in your active window, this option will be greyed out.
    • Files - One or more .RFAs selected from your local or network file system.
    • Folder - All families from a folder selected from your file system. This option will also add families from any sub-folders within the selected folder. Non-family files (those not ending in .rfa) will be ignored.
    • FE Family - A family that you have open in the family editor. This option only appears when the family editor is your active window.
    • Active View - A drafting view or sheet that you have open. This option only appears when a drafting view or sheet is your active window.
  4. If you are adding only one family using any of the options above, then a dialog will appear with options to edit the family name and add a comment.Single family confirmation dialog

  5. If you are adding multiple families, then a confirmation dialog will appear displaying the number of families to be added.Multiple family confirmation dialog

  6. Click Upload at the bottom of the dialog to begin uploading the content to the library.

    • A progress bar will appear showing the number of items remaining to be uploaded. Depending on the number of families being added, the upload process may take some time.
    • If you don’t want to wait for the upload to finish, you can click the Sync Later button and the upload will resume in the background the next time that your computer is idle.Synchronization dialog screen
    • You can check the upload progress at any time by hovering your mouse over the Kinship icon in the Windows system tray.View upload progress
    • Note: Uploading is a two-step process. Kinship immediately creates new entries in the library for any families you add. However, they will be marked as Pending Upload until the family files have been uploaded in the background. Depending on the amount of content being added, it may take some time before all families are fully available in the library.
